PRINCIPI ATTIVI: olio essenziale (0,2-2,8%): monoterpeni: acetato di bornile, acetato di mirtenile, camfene, pineni ecc.; sesquiterpeni non volatili (acidi carbassilici ciclopentanici): acido valerenico, acido acetossivalerenico, acido idrossivalerenico; sesquiterpenivolatili: valeranale, valerianolo, valerenolo e suoi esteri, valeranone, alcol kessilico, eudesmatriene e altri carburi. Iridoidi o Valepotriati (0,8-1,7%): valtrato e isovaltrato come maggioritari (non sono idrosolubili, sono termolabili e instabili si degradano in baldrinali); alcaloidi (tracce): actinidia, naftiridilmetilcetone; acidi-fenoli; acida y-amino-butirrico; flavonoidi (6-metil-apigenolo, linarina).
La composizione dell’ olio essenziale varia secondo la stagione, le condizioni di coltura e soprattutto procedimenti di ottenimento.
La concentrazione in acido valerianico e dei suoi derivati (0,2-0,7%), è massima in marzo (anche 0,9%). La radice fresca è pressoché inodore: durante l’essiccamento compare il tipico odore dovuto alla liberazione dell’acido isovalerianico.
